The idea of the universe being billions of years old is what is being explored in this blog. The question I want to ask is why do you think the universe is billions of years old? I wonder, do you realize this is contrary to what we are taught in God's Word? People are questioning what God made known directly to Moses. God gave Moses His account of Creation. The Creation account tells us that God created the heavens and the earth in six literal days about 6,000 years ago. This is verified through the Old Testament's use of the word day and through the lineage that leads up to the birth of Jesus Christ. So, the question to ponder is where did this idea of billions of years come from? In this writing, I am going to offer perspective on this subject and I would like for you to ask yourself why do you believe what you believe? Is there a good reason to believe the universe is billions of years old or has man forced this idea upon us?
God and angels do not need the universe for their existence
God does not tell us His origin and we profess that He has existed forever. Angels were created by God. God does not tell us when He created angels. Neither God nor angels are subject to existing in a natural, physical world. However, mankind is subject to living in a natural, physical body, on a natural, physical planet-Earth, and in a natural, physical universe. Again, neither the existence of God nor of angels requires living in a natural, physical world. They are part of a supernatural realm and not subject to the limitations of a natural and physical universe. I believe the idea of the universe being needed as part of the existence of God and angels is a false notion.
Time benefits mankind
Time was introduced by God for man's benefit to define, measure and track days, years and seasons. Time was not created for nor is it a requirement for God and angels. God and angels transcend time. They exist outside of the limitations of time. They are not subject to man's limitations living here on Earth.
Six literal days of creation
I have shared information on this in several earlier blogs, see links below. Throughout the Old Testament when the word day (yom) Is qualified by using a number and / or the words morning and/or evening it is always referring to a literal regular day. Thus, simply each of the 6 days of creation referred to in Genesis 1 are regular ordinary literal days.
Genealogy tells us when Adam was created
The meticulous genealogical lineage leading up to the birth of Jesus Christ is found in Chapters 5 and 11 of Genesis and in Matthew 1 along with Jewish records. There is little doubt that these track when the creation of Adam took place, about 4,000 years before the birth of Jesus or about 6,000 years ago today.
I believe a sizeable part of the reason there is this belief that the universe is billions of years old is because people have gone outside of God's Word and claimed such things as macro-evolution (vertical evolution) as how things happened to come into being. Evolving from chemical soup into plants, into animals and into man would require millions and billions of years if it were at all feasible. DNA research has finally solved the dilemma and proves vertical evolution has not taken place and proves that we have a Creator. Blog links below to earlier writings.
So, we have knocked out at least three reasons for thinking the universe is billions of years old. 1) Not required for God and angels existence 2) Each day of creation week was a literal ordinary day and not an expanded length of time. 3) Macro-evolution is a BIG lie.
Fossil finds are from worldwide flood of Noah's time period
Moving on to fossil finds. I believe the discovery of what became known as dinosaurs and assumptions made by geologists because of such finds in the early 1800s started or added greatly to the idea of a gap of time between Genesis 1 verse 1 and Genesis 1 verse 2. All made up ideas of man! All premised on false assumptions. The fossils that are being dated back millions of years begin with false assumptions. The methods used for dating start with false assumptions thus they cannot produce reliable results. I am going to devote the next blog to discussing dinosaurs and look at the made up geological column that is used to designate different ages / periods of time.
So, a fourth reason for not believing the universe is billions of years old is that the fossils discovered and unburied today are from deposits made during the worldwide flood of Noah's time. Scripture clearly tells us that Noah, his family and selected animals were in the Ark 371 days. The worldwide flood took place about 4,300-4,400 years ago. The whole face of the Earth was changed as the result of the worldwide flood.
Suns, moons, stars, planets created and put in place 6,000 years ago
Now, let's look for a moment at the universe and its display of stars, suns, moons and planets.
There will be a future blog devoted to looking at evidence pointing to the young age of these creations.
In this blog, I want to point out that God created everything in a mature and fully operational state. A fifth reason not to believe in billions of years.
Scientists studying the galaxies - suns, moons, stars and planets, etc. must keep in mind they all were created in a mature state therefore distance and time, etc., has little relevance except for bringing glory to and thanking God. Scientists can examine the universe all they want, but instead of questioning God about how and when things were made, give God the glory for His splendor and great majesty. Wouldn't it be wonderful to look at the magnificence of the universe through eyes that see and believe God?
For example, when God put the stars in place on Day 4, immediately they served as lights in the evening sky. Even though their distance from Earth is measured by man in light years does not mean it took that length of time for light to reach the Earth. It was immediate because God spoke everything into existence in six literal days 6,000 years ago.
Genesis 2:1-2 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished and ALL THE HOST of them. And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had made, and he rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had made.
I would like for you to ask yourself why do you believe what you believe? Is there a good reason to believe the universe is billions of years old or has man forced this idea upon you? What is your answer?

A day is a thousand years. Why do we put God in a box?
Welcome to Christian Blog idahostevens,
In response to your comment:
2 Peter 3:7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. 8 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.
If you are referring to this passage as your reason for believing each day was a 1,000 years, the reference here concerns God's longsuffering toward man in His desire that no one perish but that each come to repentence. It is referring to God's judgment and wrath soon to come in these end of days. The statement "one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day," actually cancels itself out.
I have written and commented a good number of times concerning the six literal days of creation. The Old Testament's use of the word day proves that God is referring to a literal day and not an extended period of time. The links above will take you to two blogs written on this topic.
If each day in the creation week account was a thousand years as you suggest, it would mean that more than 5,000 years would have passed before man was created. It would mean that death had already come into this world before Adam and Eve sinned. That directly contradicts God's message to mankind.
There is good reason why this topic is of such great importance. Because of man allowing the work of Satan to distort the very foundational book of God's Word, Genesis, a great hindrance to the teaching of the Gospel of Jesus Christ has come about. Genesis 1-11 provides us with the very foundation for the reason why God chose to become flesh. He made a way for man to be reconciled to Him. God shed the first blood ever shed to provide covering for Adam's and Eve's sin. God requires the shedding of blood for the remission of sins. Throughout the Old Testament we see the sacrifice, shedding of blood, of animals as atonement for their sin. God became flesh so that a pure blood sacrifice could be made. Jesus died once for all providing the one and only way for man to be reconciled to God. Jesus Christ, the one and only way to God. There is so much in Genesis that helps us to see God more clearly, to learn more about His character, His nature, His ways. It is exceedingly sad to have such pollution of the purity of God's Word in our way. We must believe God's Word, not mans' word, period.
I ask that you read the many blogs I have written on Genesis--Creation Account and the Worldwide Flood--and the ones I will be writing looking at each day of the Creation Week.
Thank you for your comment.
The statement "one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day," actually does NOT cancel itself out.
As day in "But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night" does NOT mean a 24 hour period. You may disagree.
Sorry to disagree with you. I come from the field of physics and math. We could go on for "days" and still disagree.
For me, it is not an all important subject that requires parsing of the word day. I really don't care. What Jesus did for me on the cross is what matters to me. What I can do for Him is what is on my mind.
I have been reading this debate for more than 50 years. It is not worth my time.
Why did God require a blood sacrifice as an atonement for sin? Why did God become flesh?
There are so very many who do not believe there is a need for a Savior. Their religion tells them they can get to heaven by being good or by doing certain works. The reason why God requires a blood sacrifice. one that is a pure blood sacrifice, is revealed to us in the early chapters of Genesis. All the stuff that has been forced upon us by man has made the truth of the book of Genesis almost hidden from our eyes. People need to see who Jesus is and why He had to come in the flesh and become the perfect blood sacrifice for mankind. He is the only way to become reconciled to God. There is great importance in seeing the simple truth presented to us in Genesis.
This effort is not just for someone who has been raised in a Christian environment, it is also an effort to explain why Christians believe in a Savior. We are to plant seeds and it is very useful to be able to explain why Jesus and only Jesus!! Because He became the perfect blood sacrifice required by God! Nothing other than receiving Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior will bring salvation to the lost. We need to quit polluting Genesis 1-11.
Thanks for a very interesting blog. Perhaps one of the main reasons I tend to favour an old Universe is the evidence for what is generally known as the 'big bang' occurring 14 or so billion years ago. The initial evidence for an expanding Universe (Hubble's red-shifted galaxies) is quite strong but if that were the only evidence then I'm sure other valid explanations for those observations could be made. However, the prediction of a Cosmic Microwave Background radiation and it's subsequent discovery in 1964 strikes me as the epitome of good, impartial science. The big bang theory does have some problems but regardless of your starting assumptions I cannot see any other way of reasonably interpreting the evidence. Would be great to hear your thoughts,
By what I am reading in your comment, you tend to believe in an old universe and in the Big Bang Theory. I suppose as a student of physics, this is what was or is being taught in college. Honestly, I thought science had pretty much done away with the whole idea of a Big Bang.
I believe the first exposure I had to refuting the Big Bang Theory came from Carl Baugh's program Creation in the 21st Century aired on TBN. Baugh, a scientist, became a Creation scientist when he saw the proof pointed to a Creator. What hit me was when Baugh talked about what would happen if there had been such a thing as a big bang. I know I cannot explain it well, but with a super explosion of a small mass what would spin away from it would all be moving in the same direction and Carl pointed out just using our solar system there are things defy a big bang explanation. What stuck with me is the fact that Uranus and Venus rotate in the opposite direction from the rest of our planets.
In the book, Unlocking the Mysteries of Creation by Dennis Petersen a section reads:
"Is There Evidence to Disprove the Big Bang Theory:
Did the universe begin with a super-explosion of a small mass 10-15 billion years ago? According to demonstrated laws of physics certain things should be expected from a proposed cosmic explosion. Other things would be absolutely impossible in such a framework. The following problems are observed in our solar system and defy the big bang explanation.
When the Holy Spirit spoke this word of wisdom to me "Believe His Word, not man's word," that was that. I will always believe God's Word above anything science and scientists have to say that does not line up with God's Word.
Some scripture about stretching (expanding) out the heavens:
Isaiah 40:22 It is He that sitteth upon the circle of the Earth, and the inhabitants thereof are the grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in.
Isaiah 51:14 And forgettest the Lord thy maker, that hath stretched forth the heavens, and laid the foundations of the earth. Also Zechariah 12:1
Carl Baugh's (Creation Evidence Museum), Kent Hovind's (Dr. Dino) and Ken Ham's (Answers in Genesis) websites provide much scientific information for further study.
As I go through this series of blogs, I will present examples of physical evidence for a young universe and earth.
