Written in My Heart: Baptism With The Holy Spirit – Speaking in Tongues (#13)
The first Baptism with the Holy Spirit literally took place on the Day of Pentecost. Its purpose was to give the apostles and believers in Jesus Christ the power to go out and spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ and do God's work throughout the world.
Jesus, after His resurrection and in His glorified body, was able to breathe His Spirit into the apostles as told to us in John 20: 22 (NIV) "And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit." At the time we become saved we receive the Spirit of Christ - referred to as the Holy Spirit. When our life belongs to Jesus and we are walking with Jesus, Jesus abides in us and we abide in Him. Christians look to the Holy Spirit to teach, comfort, lead and guide them in their walk with Jesus. How totally awesome, how totally beautiful this is.
Then, Jesus told His disciples to wait until they received power from on high and on Pentecost we see the Baptism with the Holy Spirit come into play.
Acts 2: 1 "When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance." (NKJV)
Again, I state the purpose of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit with the speaking in tongues accompanying this experience is to give followers power to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ, to do God's work on earth under the power of the Holy Spirit. Praise and thank you Jesus! It is an honor and privilege to serve the one and only living God, the Creator!
This is my personal testimony concerning receiving the Baptism With the Holy Spirit with evidence being the Speaking in Tongues:
Speaking in Tongues
In late January of 2002, I was participating in a Bible Study. The material we were exploring was titled "Becoming a Vessel God Can Use." As we were studying together, this message popped off of one of the pages of the book. God LONGS to have a personal relationship with His children, even more than He wants us to serve Him. The knowledge that God literally longed for an intimate relationship impacted me greatly. I had been working hard to obey the assignment the Holy Spirit had revealed In October of 2001 and was devoting more time to trying to do what I thought God wanted me to do than I was spending time rejoicing and enjoying my relationship with Him.
I put aside everything I had been working on and spent the next several weeks just expressing love, sitting in God's presence and exploring His Word. During this time, I read Experiencing the Holy Spirit, a book by Andrew Murray. After the first week of devoting myself to experiencing and knowing more of God, I felt the nudge of the Holy Spirit. I sensed I was to ask for tongues. I thought this was kind of strange. I was not really afraid of the idea of speaking in tongues. After all, my brother and his wife supposedly spoke in tongues. Anyway, I obeyed and started in prayer asking for the gift of tongues.
Three weeks later, on Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at about 4 a.m., I woke up and went into the bathroom. Upon entering the room, I heard the "still small voice" of the Holy Spirit inside me clearly say, "speak in tongues." As I walked into the living room, I started feeling strange words forming in my throat and I began speaking them out loud. Yes, the Holy Spirit had given me the gift of tongues. I spent the next three hours, until my husband came home from work, sitting in my recliner and speaking in tongues. I experienced language changes. I believe I spoke in five or six different tongues during these three hours. One of them sounded Scandinavian.
With the gift of tongues, the Holy Spirit put into me the sense of being cemented. I believe He was telling me I was cemented in Christ Jesus. What a glorious feeling. I believe this is confirmed in God's Word.
" In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also after that ye believed, ye were SEALED with that Holy Spirit of promise. Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory." Ephesians 1:13-14 (KJV)
There are many who question tongues. I really have to question why when it is so Biblical. Its purpose is explained in the book of 1 Corinthians chapter 12. Verse 7 states “To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.”
After being baptized with the Holy Spirit, I began to desire becoming part of a spirit-filled church. I liked the church I was a member of, but, they were not openly supporting the speaking in tongues. You had to pretty much keep this to yourself. It is sad for churches to question and even put down the gifts given out by the Holy Spirit. The church I am a member of now believes that when a person is baptized with the Holy Spirit, the evidence of this is the speaking in tongues.
I know that God has put such a great desire in me to minister to others through teaching, sharing His Word and sharing the personal testimony He has given me. Praying in tongues brings much peace and comfort to my soul.
We are told by Paul in Ephesians 6:
Ephesians 6:18 - Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; KJV
Jude 1:20 - But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, KJV
1 Corinthians 14:15 - What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. KJV
1 Corinthians 14:2 - For he that speaketh in an [unknown] tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth [him]; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. KJV
