Written In My Heart: Indwelling of the Holy Spirit (8)
The focus of last week’s writing was on my becoming born again in Jesus Christ. This most wonderful event happened in the early morning of Tuesday, October 2, 2001. I repented of my sin toward God, gave up my “self” and gave my life to God and made the commitment to follow and serve Jesus for the rest of my life. It is at this very moment of Jesus cleansing me of my sin toward God that my body became the temple of the Holy Spirit.
I literally felt the Holy Spirit come down upon me and enter my body. The Holy Spirit had come to live within me. I was and am no longer my own. I belong to God. What a difference this has made in my life.
Paul’s letter to believers in Corinth said this:
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NKJV)
19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.
I wish to offer this perspective. Until you are born again in Jesus Christ, you are spiritually dead. We all inherited a sin nature from Adam. This caused each and every one of us to be separated from God. At the time you repent of your sin toward God and are saved, the Holy Spirit comes to live within you. The death of Jesus on the cross made salvation possible. You can now choose to be saved. It is at this moment that you become reconnected to God. A direct channel has been opened between you and God through the Holy Spirit.
I think of it this way because of what I have experienced. Before, I gave my life to God, I would daydream. When I became born again and indwelled by the Holy Spirit, the daydreaming turned to hearing God speak within me. Receiving revelations from God. Actually, at times, hearing the “still small voice” of God speak. God’s Word came to life for me. As I yield to the Holy Spirit, He guides and teaches me. He is very much my comforter. I am now spiritually alive. The Holy Spirit continues His work to change me to become more and more like Jesus Christ. It is hard to describe but very evident in my life. I very much like the fact that the Holy Spirit always turns my attention toward Jesus no matter the situation and what I am going through. He keeps pointing me to the answer to everything that I need, Jesus.
The first time I heard the “still small voice” of God speak within me, the Holy Spirit said “all that I have done in the past was in preparation for what I am going to do.”
Next week, I will share more of what happened during that first month after I was born again.
