Happy Australia Day.
The typical aussie. ( ofcourse this doesn't apply to everyone out there)

1) You're familiar with Neighbours, Home and Away, Playschool, A Country Practice, Norman Gunston, Barry Humphries, Blue Heelers, Ray Martin, Bert Newton, Lisa McCune, Jon Burgess, Molly Meldrum, Kerry O'Brien, and of course, Kerry Packer and Rupert Murdoch.

2) It makes you happy when someone in Hollywood is actually Australian- Mel Gibson, Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett, Baz Luhrman, Elle MacPherson, Olivia Newton-John, Midnight Oil, ACDC, INXS, Greg Norman, Cathy Freeman, Dawn Fraser, Pat Rafter, Ian Thorpe

3) You've done the "hot sand" dance at the beach while running from the ocean back to your towel.

4) You've seen Gallipoli, Crocodile Dundee, Young Einstein, Muriel's Wedding, The Castle, Beneath Clouds, Strictly Ballroom, 40,000 Horsemen, and maybe even WolfCreek.

5) You start using words like "reckon" and call people "mate".

6) You stop greeting people with "hello" and go straight to the "gday" or "how ya doin' ?"

7) You know how to abbreviate every word, all of which usually end in -o: arvo, combo, garbo, kero, metho, milko, muso, rego, servo, smoko, speedo, righto etc.

8) You own a pair of ugg boots.

9) You've been to a day-nighter cricket match and screamed out incomprehensibly until your throat went raw.

10) You kind of know the first verse to the national anthem, but don't know what "girt" means.

11) You know how to slip, slop, slap like it's nobody's business

12) You've risked attending an outdoor music festival on the hottest day of the year.

13) You've ever used the words " tops, ripper, sick, mad, rad, sweet "to mean good. And then you place 'bloody' in front of it when you REALLY mean it.

14) One word: Skippy.

15) You own a pair of thongs for everyday use, and another pair of "dress thongs" for special occasions.

16) You don't know what's in a meat pie, and you don't care.

17) You pronounce Australia as "Stralya".

18) You call soccer soccer, not football.

19) You've squeezed Vegemite through a vita wheat to make little Vegemite worms.

20) You suck your coffee through a Tim Tam.

21) You realise that lifeguards are the only people who can get away with wearing Speedos.

22) You pledge allegiance to Vegemite over Promite.

23) You understand the value of public holidays.

24) Your weekends are spent barracking for your favourite sports team.

25) You own a chesty

26) You see people walking bare-foot on the sidewalk and don't scorn because you're doing it too.

27) You've played beach cricket with a tennis ball and the one hand, one bounce rule still applies.

28) You firmly believe that in the end, everything will be ok, and have told a mate in tough times that "She'll be right, mate".

29) You use the phrase, "no worries" at least once a day.

30) You've been on a beach holiday and have probably stayed in a caravan.

31) You constantly shorten words to "brekkie", "arvo" and "barbie"

32) You have at some time in your life slept with Aeroguard on in the summer. Maybe even as perfume.

33) You know the oath of mateship can never be limited by geographical distance.

34) You know there's no LBW in backyard cricket, and over the fence is out.

35) You know you're aussie when you know "Grub's up" is a good thing.

I Know there aren't many aussies on CB but that's cool.Your probably wondering what the heck this blog is even about lol. Its because tomorrow is Australia day. So what is Australia day?! It's a day of remembering who we are, and what it is about this great brown land i love so much. A day to celebrate our nation, and it's people. A day to reflect on what was, and what is to come. This year, we also take the time out to remember what was happening this time last year with the Victorian Bushfires that took the lives and homes of far too many people. We say thankyou to the unsung heroes. The fire-fighters, the life guards, the emergency services in general. The bloke and the woman who do what they can to make this country what it is. I will take my patriotic hat off now but I just wanted to share with u guys abit about it.

Happy Australia day.

Be safe. Take care and have a ripper of a day.

This clip was from last years Bushfire appeal. whilst it is sad, its an amazing Australian Song and i believe it truly captures the aussie spirit of sticking by eachother and rallying together when the going gets tough.

Ahh, Shani! Another brilliantly humous blog.

In spite of being just across the ditch I can't get around to calling jandals anything but jandals! May be it's an age thing

I would like to disagree with one of your 'ownership' things though. Russel Crowe is kiwi born and bred - you just imported him.
I'm not complaining mind. You can have him... just don't touch the pav!

This is so awesome Shani!
Wouldn't it be a riot if all of us from different parts of even the US could come up with our regional 'language'? :)
But, I'm with Teresa... interpretation please

God bless you for your awesome humo(u)r :clap:

Aw Shani-Girl, Happy Australia Day!

Anyone here at CB who knows me realizes that although I am Minnesota born and bred, I am an "Honorary Oceanian" and as Kbird's twin, was even granted permission to join the Oceanian group. That is not an honor I take lightly!

I am very glad that God brought a certain young Aussie here to CB for she has certainly blessed and enriched my life!

Blessings!

Shani that was fantastic! I said yes to every single one (and I do mean every single one) except 9,10 and 26!!! How funny is that!!!!! :D Happy Australia day my girl, lets give praise and thanks to our God who saw fit to birth us into the best country on the planet for such a time as this! xoxo

Pamela Tough

BTW - I thought since there was calls for translation I might be able to help :D

Thongs over here are like sandals - flat with a triangular piece that goes between ur first and second toe - also known in Australia as "japanese riding boots" :P No offence of course! Of course we have the other type of thong, we just dont wear them on our feet... and generally most aussies will try and steer clear of wearing them in public for all to see at all really - under garment only thankyou very much! :D

Ugg boots are just boots made out of like, leather stuff lined usually with sheeps wool or the equivalent - a MUST in winter...

Arvo=afternoon

Convo=conversation

Garbo=Garbage Man

Kero - Kerosene

Metho - Methylated spirits

Milko = milk man (also a very popular lolly or "candy" as you call them)

Muso = musician

Rego = registration (usually for your car)

Servo - Service Station (or gas station as it is more commonly known over there!)

Smoko - morning or afternoon tea depending on the time of day (also can be a snack anytime really) usually involves a "cuppa" or cup of tea or coffee and something to eat - for working men a meat pie or sausage roll may be preferable, usually procured from the "smoko wagon" which is a little van that comes around to workplaces selling such items :D

Speedo = speedometer or also mens bathing attire (the ones that look like undies (or underwear - see even in describing Australian terms I'm using Australian terms!!!) which are also less commonly known as "budgie smugglers" - dont ask! :P

Brekkie = breakfast

Barbie= bbq

Aeroguard=insect repellant with a very distinct odour

"Grubs up" is a way of saying dinner (or the meal) is ready - I think it probably derives from indigenous peoples who would eat grubs (literally) known as whitchity grubs

"Bloke" is a man

Such a blessing to be able to share some of our uniqueness with you all :D Hope this helps!
