Recently I was in the process of moving house. For those who read my previous blogs and knew of my situation after the demise of my beloved mum, I was to find an alternative accommodation as the house I lived in belonged to my brothers.
With little savings and also being unable to work for a few years due to ill health, I wondered how I was to find an accommodation in this expensive pressurizing society where I lived here in Singapore, a country that was so fast growing last year with a GDP growth of 15%. I felt so left out in this mad chase for the nation's wealth and for the nation's growth. I missed one of its golden moments.
Yet I told the Lord that I would be still and want to see the salvation of the Lord in the midst of personal lack and bleak future. I just wanted to see that God would keep His promises to me, that He would provide all my needs, especially housing needs which was most pressing.
Six months had since passed. The property prices kept on going up. With a small inheritance from my late mum, though insufficient to purchase a tiny apartment, but due to a mandatory law, I could use my old age savings in the CPF (Central Provident Fund) to make up for the purchase of an apartment.
To cut the long story short, I was blessed with a 2 bedrooms apartment which I liked, a simple apartment far from the many expressways of Singapore, a tiny apartment though small but was sufficient for my needs, an apartment quite exclusive with only 3 neighbours on the same level.
Whilst making arrangement to move there, my youngest sister turned out to be a surprise and a blessing. All those years of helping her take care for her 3 little kids in my mother's home bore some fruit. She was willing to buy a small condominium unit nearby with my other sister. And she was willing to let me live free for the next few years.
Praise the Lord for such good generous sister. This is one of the salvations that the Lord is providing for me. Who will believe that a younger sister will help in this kind manner? On top of that, another sister willingly gives me monthly funds for my expenditure. Praise the Lord for such good siblings. May the Lord bless their and many other siblings' generous hearts!
So I now have two flats, one to stay and one to rent out. I can now receive some income to pay a small rent to my youngest sister even though she is willing to let me live for free. And the leftover sum can be used for my daily needs. I'snt it wonderful that the Lord provides me with much!
One can never fathom the provisions of God, how He provides for all my needs, my daily expenses, and my medical needs for all these years. God has never failed me, though there are times when I do not much, I have never lacked. Hallelujah, my Heavenly Father is the wealthiest tycoon of the wealthiest tycoons of this world. No one can ever out give our God.
In the midst of house removal and renovations, I can't help but thought of these few verses in the Bible, in the Book of Haggai.
Haggai 1, verses 3 - 11
3: Then the Word of Yahweh came by Haggai, the prophet, saying,
4: "Is it a time for you yourselves to dwell in your panelled houses, while this house lies waste?
5: Now therefore this is what Yahweh of Hosts says: Consider your ways.
6: You have sown much, and bring in little. You eat, but you don't have enough. You drink, but you aren't filled with drink. You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm, and he who earns wages earns wages to put them into a bag with holes in it."
7: This is what Yahweh of Hosts says: "Consider your ways.
8: Go up to the mountain, bring wood, and build the house. I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified," says Yahweh.
9: "You looked for much, and, behold, it came to little; and when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why?" says Yahweh of Hosts, "Because of my house that lies waste, while each of you is busy with his own house.
10: Therefore for your sake the heavens withhold the dew, and the earth withholds its fruit.
11: I called for a drought on the land, on the mountains, on the grain, on the new wine, on the oil, on that which the ground brings forth, on men, on cattle, and on all the labor of the hands."
Think about it. The Lord says as long as we take care of His house, He will take care of our houses and our needs.
Our purses will not have holes, such like having unnecessary repairs of this or that, our pockets will not have holes like falling sick unnecessarily and spending much on medical advices and treatments amidst much physical suffering.
In Haggai Chapter One verse 10 and 11, God says He will withhold the dew and the earth will withhold its fruit. He will also call for a drought on the land and on the grain and the wine, just because we do not take care of His house but only take care of our own!
In modern days context, it means that our businesses and our jobs will closed down, the banks suddenly will shut down and all our savings gone. All that belong to us are no longer protected by the Lord, so our savings, our health, our lives, our nations, our businesses will just disappear.
But if and if only we will take care of the House of God, take effort to build His House first, to put His Kingdom first, to serve Him and put the Gospel's needs first, He will protect what that are ours and grant us fruits from our labour and will grant us the abundant life.
Think about it. How can we just care for ourselves, our own houses that they may be panelled, with all the carpeting and fine furnishings and yet the house of God is in ruin?
Little wonder why God will not bless ! It's time to remember to take care of God's House, it's never too late!
Always put God first and His house first, even if they are small sums of money, small efforts, and small contributions. God does not despise small beginnings, small sums or small efforts. He sees our hearts towards Him, not the amount. He only sees our labours of love for Him.
Ask yourself this question: are you too busy building up your life, your hobbies or interest, your family, your business, your panelled house, your all but forget to take care in building God's house physically, materially and spiritually?
Lastly, do not for once think that God is against us when we are rich, or when we are healthy and doing well. Far from it! God is not a slave driver!
It is only when we forget to take care of His House whilst building our own dream house, it's when we enjoy our lives and forget those in His House who are less fortunate who need help, it's when we are peaceful and have plenty that we forget those in God's many other Houses around the world who need support. It's when we become self centred and selfish and care about ourselves, not His house, and His people! That's what bothers God-- our wrong attitudes and selfish ambitions!
Therefore decide this day to take care of God's House in your country and throughout the world just like the way we will take care of our own beautiful houses. Amen
