Today was the second anniversary of the devastating earth quake that destroyed the CBD and eastern suburbs of Christchurch, my countries second largest city. When the dust had settled; literally, 185 people lost their lives and the repair bill has been estimated at NZ$15 billion, making it by far New Zealand's costliest natural disaster, and the third-costliest earthquake (nominally) worldwide. Today the people of the city remembered, but the grief and pain remains as heartbreaking as ever for those left behind.
Under grey skies at a civic memorial service in Latimer Square, used as a makeshift triage centre during New Zealand's worst natural disaster, Prime Minister John Key said February 22 will always be a poignant day.
I am now going to write what for many people will be seen as hogwash and nonsense and to others as mischievous making with a callous undertone, while to others I will be called a religious nut.
I believed very clearly that the earthquake was a judgement by God upon the city and by implication the country.
Look at the following points:-
1/ Approx. 18 months previously God God clearly spoke to me and said; and I quote – “I am going the rock this nation.”
2/ Christchurch is built on an alluvial plain with no known fault lines anywhere near the area. There are well recognized fault lines through out the country but not in Christchurch. No one could explain why the city was hit.
3/ Christchurch is a cathedral city build around a square which was modelled on the cities in Briton. Hence the cathedral was the icon of the city, which personified the character and personality of the city. The earthquake destroyed the people’s symbol. To this day the city has not recovered from this destruction of their beloved cathedral.
4/ Since the early 1970’s the city fathers have encouraged, as a tourist attraction, a Wizard. For the entertainment of tourists this wizard would take up a position outside the cathedral and proceed to Mock God, the Church and any thing to do with Christianity. For years an elderly lady known as the “Bible Lady” would do her best to refute the wizard’s rantings, but she was always shouted down as the wizard was the more popular of the two.
Today the rebuild has still not begun, despite the promises from the government and it is reported that some children are still suffering emotionally. To compound the pressure that the city is under the government announced recently that many schools will either close or merge. This for many people has been he last straw for in this city you are grouped classified and labelled by the school that you went to, which determined your position in the cities society.
The city and the country are still feeling the ‘after-shocks’ from this event two years ago.
I will let each reader draw their own conclusions, but I will finish with these quotes from Gods word:-
But they mocked God's messengers, despised his words and scoffed at his prophets until the wrath of the LORD was aroused against his people and there was no remedy . 2 Chron 36
These things you have done and I kept silent; you thought I was altogether like you. But I will rebuke you and accuse you to your face. Ps 50
Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows . Gal 6.
