The Holy Spirit seeks to draw our attention to 1 Thessalonians chapter 5 v1-11.
As we live in troubled times many Christians are beginning to become anxious and worried about the future. One does not need to spell out the uncertainty that families faced today as we are reminded each time we watch the news. Within the church the once solid foundations that our fore fathers believed are being whittled down until now many churches are no different to specialized clubs or social events; even now the Anglican Church is debating gay priests. With so much confusion many believers are slipping into a dark place.
The Holy Spirit seeks to awaken our thoughts concerning the day of the Lord. He is asking: will we be caught out and not be ready for the return of our Lord? We are reminded that the return of the Lord will happen suddenly and because many believers are camped in a dark place they will miss the return. The Holy Spirit is saying that many of the Lords followers have slipped into the night where they are blind and cannot see the events of the world, for we are told that when the fig tree sends forth it leaves the time is near. See Matthew 24.
When we walk with God, we are in the light, as he is in the light, but the enemy has caused many believers to begin living in the night; they are not alert as their spirits have been dulled. They have become children of the night as they have failed to be self controlled; forgetting to put on faith, love and hope.
The enemy has robbed many Christian of this simple fact – we must put on. Once we are saved we have to grow; we have to work on our salvation; we have to grow in our most holy faith; we cannot sit down and think that since we are saved by the grace of God we have a life pass to heaven. Look at Philippians 2 ” Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed--not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence--continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling,
How do we stop ourselves from falling asleep?
We must - put on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet.
How do we do this as the enemy has robbed many believers as to the How to.
Firstly we have to have an act of the Will. We have to decide that we are going to put on faith love and hope. We must be clear in our minds that this is what we must do.
Secondly we must thirst and hunger after the Holy Spirit from where all faith love and hope comes from. We must wake up and seek after God wanting to devour his love, hope and faith. We have to ask God for faith hope and love. And keep on asking until we receive them as Jesus taught us in the parable of the judge and widow – see Luke 18.
This is a simple truth that the enemy has robbed us of – we do not receive blessings from God because we do not ask. God is a God who loves to bless his children, but his children do not come to him and ask. James says we do not have because we do not ask. Jesus says Ask and you will receive, knock and it will be opened seek and you will find.
Praise be to God who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. But we have to ask. This is the truth that the enemy has robbed us of, that is we must ask for faith, hope and love. Only by doing this will we remain awake on the day the Lord returns. The Holy Spirits word to us today is – ask God for Hope, Love and Faith.
Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.38
